BNSF Train De-Railment Near Marceline

MARCELINE, Mo.- 7/9/21- A BNSF freight train derailed late Thursday night on the north edge of Marceline. Information is still vague but it appears that a large section of the westbound freight train derailed and destroyed both sets of main tracks in various places between East Marceline and the Elmwood crossing. One boxcar rolled down the embankment and was physically blocking a road underpass. That underpass remains blocked at the time of this report. Several crossings in the Marceline area were temporarily closed but have been re-opened for use. The Marceline Police Department confirmed to KMEM news that there were no injuries and there was no threat to public safety from any hazardous materials. A special BNSF freight train was headed to the area with a load of rail, ties and ballast to facilitate repairs to the main line damage at Marceline. KMEM news reached out to a spokesperson with the BNSF Railway but has not received a statement or comment as of the time of this report.
