Fatal Crash Claims Life of Arbela Man

CLARK COUNTY, Mo.- An Arbela man has died as a result of a fatal accident that occurred Friday morning. The crash happened just before 10:00 am on Highway 136, just east of the Scotland County & Clark County line. The Missouri State Highway Patrol told KMEM News that 82-year old Billie Orton was trying to pull into his driveway when he drove into the path of an eastbound 2006 Ford F250 pulling a trailer. The Ford was driven by 48-year old Richard Buford of Downing. The Buford vehicle struck Orton’s 2014 Cadillac. The Buford vehicle received moderate damage while the Orton vehicle was totaled. Buford was wearing a seatbelt, while Orton was not.
Orton was taken from the scene by ambulance to Scotland County Hospital and later airlifted to University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Orton succumbed to his injuries at 6:15 pm Friday evening.
The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, Scotland County Sheriff’s Department, Clark County EMS, Scotland County EMS and Gorin Fire and Rescue.
