Written by on March 30, 2023

ALBIA, Ia.- A car vs semi collision in Monroe County resulted in the death of an Albia man Wednesday afternoon.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that a pickup driven by 30-year old Andrew Gunter of Albia was traveling eastbound on Highway 34 between 197th Trail and 595th Avenue west of Albia when it crossed the centerline.  The pickup struck the driver’s side of a semi driven westbound by 58-year old Steven Chamberlain of Chariton.

After the collision, the pickup rolled over and came to rest on its roof.  The semi also rolled over as it entered the north ditch.  Chamberlain was uninjured, but the two occupants of the pickup had to be extricated by emergency workers.

Gunter was pronounced dead at the scene.  His passenger, 37-year old Tyler Kipfer, was taken to Mercy One Hospital by LifeFlight for treatment of his injuries.  Chamberlain and Kipfer were wearing their seatbelts, Gunter was not.  The Patrol was assisted at the scene by multiple local and state agencies.
