Kahoka Men Arrested on Burglary and Drug Charges

GRANGER, Mo.- Updated 8/30/21 at 4:00 PM. Two Kahoka men were arrested on Sunday for multiple drug and theft related charges. Scotland County Sheriff Bryan Whitney tells KMEM News that 34-year old Shawn M. Sturm and 45-year old Andy R. McVeigh, both of Kahoka, are in custody on charges stemming from an incident at a vacant residence in rural Granger, about ¼ mile west of the Route F and Highway 136 intersection.
Scotland County Deputy Jason Moss arrived on scene at 8:20 am. The two men entered a fenced-in yard then forcibly broke a lock on the house door to gain entry. Upon Deputy Moss’ arrival, the two men broke through a storm window and screen as they fled from the house.
Sturm was subsequently apprehended. During a verbal consent search of his truck, a bag of methamphetamine, a glass pipe with burnt residue and butane torches were found. Sturm admitted to having smoked meth that morning. Sturm is a repeat offender with prior felony drug charges in Clark County. During an interview at the Sheriff’s office, Sturm admitted to entering the premises without permission. Items that were stolen from the residence were found in an S-10 pickup belonging to Sturm.
McVeigh fled on foot and remained at large throughout the morning and early afternoon. McVeigh had been a passenger in the truck that Sturm had driven and his wallet, ID, cell phone and items purchased earlier that morning from Casey’s in Kahoka were present in the truck during the consent search. Additionally, a container of methamphetamine was located in the door pouch where McVeigh’s wallet was located. McVeigh was taken into custody at 2:20 pm when he turned himself in at the Luray City Park. He is a repeat offender with prior drug charges in Adair and Clark Counties in Missouri as well as Van Buren County in Iowa. He also has prior charges of property damage, forgery, burglary and probation violation as well.
During an interview at the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, McVeigh admitted to smoking methamphetamine that morning. He also admitted to entering the residence without permission.
Court documents additionally indicate that Sturm is a primary suspect of interest in multiple crimes of theft, stealing, and tampering with and stealing a motor vehicle in Clark County, as well as additional cases in Lee County Iowa. He was in possession of advanced burglary tools in his truck when he was arrested, along with items believed to be stolen from multiple other locations in the recent past.
Both men have been charged with two felony counts each of 2nd degree burglary and a felony count of possession of a controlled substance other than 35 grams or less of marijuana or synthetic cannabinoid. They have also been charged with three misdemeanors apiece, including unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia- prior offender, stealing, and 2nd degree property damage.
Both men are currently lodged in the Scotland County Jail on $10,000 cash-only bond. They are scheduled for an initial appearance Tuesday morning at 9:00 am. Sheriff Whitney thanked the public for their help in this matter, as well as the Clark County Sheriff’s Department.
